Nashville Eats - Honest Roast Coffee and Bar Taco

Writer: Jake ShulmanJake Shulman

A gluten free Nashville weekend. We had a blast, ate amazing food, and are so excited to share our experiences with you!

Our first stop was L & L market right off Charlotte Ave in Nashville's Sylvan Heights neighborhood. This place is adorable with great shops and eats throughout! You can view their website here. We were patrons at Honest Coffee Roasters and loved it so much, we went back before we left. Our first trip started with a Flat White and an Oat Milk Latte.

Next time around we decided to switch it up with an iced Bootlegger Latte with oat milk. Highly recommended! It is a latte with a house made bourbon caramel sauce. So flavorful!

We were so excited to try the food here. Almost the entire menu can be made gluten free. They have a gluten free white bread for all of the sandwiches. They also have plenty of choices for açaí bowls. We had the S & S sandwich the first trip which has egg, turkey sausage, cheese, and a yummy strawberry jam. The second trip we again had the S & S again (this should tell you how good it is) and the Feli, a Cuban with turkey, ham, garlic aioli, yellow mustard, and dill pickles. If you like a good Cuban then this is a must get! The staff was knowledgable and knew to skip the panini for cross contamination but still made sure to toast the bread. Pictured below is the Feli! Click here for the menu.

While we only ate lunch at Honest Roast, they had plenty of other restaurant/bakery choices to choose from in L & L! There was a donut shop with paleo donuts (gluten free)! We didn't try them but they looked very good and can be found here. There was an adorable milkshake bar called Gracie's, a wine and cheese bar with a conveyor belt like you would see in a sushi restaurant (what a great idea?!), and a taco shop that isn't open yet but will be opening soon!

Next up, BAR TACO

For starters, the ambiance of this place was amazing. It was very COVID friendly, adding contactless ordering through a phone just like online shopping. If you needed assistance (like we did to figure out what is/what is not gluten free) you just put up a flag and they come right over.

For drinks, we got the caipirinha sanguina (left one) which was a Brazilian rum with blood orange and limes and a paloma (right one) which was one of the best ones we've had yet!

We started with the chips, guac and salsa roja. The guac was amazing and had a great lime taste!! We haven't experienced guac made that well at a restaurant in a long time. After that, we were trying to figure out what tacos to order. Little did we know, EVERY SINGLE ONE IS GLUTEN FREE. EVEN THE FRIED ONES!!! Yes, you heard that correctly. A dedicated fryer!

We couldn't believe it, but here is the proof - the allergy chart.

As you can see below, we tried almost all of them! From top to bottom in the picture:

  1. Crispy oyster - with a remoulade sauce

  2. Baja fish - tempura battered cod over a chipotle slaw (we got 2 of them!)

  3. Spiced chicken verde - with aguacate salsa

  4. Glazed pork belly - with spicy arbor chili sauce

  5. Tuna tatako - tuna with an Asian slaw in a lettuce shell

And added a side of their street corn (elote) because why not?

Now here are our opinions:

  • If you're a seafood person, the oyster taco was a win BY FAR. The batter tasted like buttery-goodness.

  • If you're a pork person, the glazed pork belly taco came in a close second place. The glaze combined with the chili sauce was an amazing flavor!

  • The Baja fish and the tuna taco are neck and neck. The Baja fish could've used a little more *mmmff*! The slaw under it didn't seem to be enough.

  • The tuna taco was good but felt out of place with the lettuce wrap. Would still get again though!

  • Lastly, unfortunately, would be the chicken taco. We added a lot of salsa to make up for the lack of flavor.

OVERALL OPINION.. GO TO THIS PLACE! It is amazing, affordable, and we cannot wait to go back. There are plenty of locations in other states and we are waiting for the day we can go to one bc fried tacos - duh.

We had an amazing time in Nashville even during pandemic times. Every restaurant we went to was very COVID friendly and allowed adequate social distancing. We hope next time we go, the world has conquered the beer virus once and for all!
